Seibukan Winter Training 2010

Well last weekend was an Awesome time up in Atlanta Ga.  April 16-18th was the annual Seibukan Winter Training Camp and what a great experience it was.  With close to 100 participants from all over the U.S., one can see the true value of holding these annual events.  Every year I attend, we as instructors, learn and benefit so much from these events, and it allows us to continue to grow and evolve in our Karate training.  This years main focus was on Renzoku Kumite and Ikkyo No Renshu.

Flowing from one technique to another

So much to practice !

Renzoku Kumite, or continuous attack, is a key element to Seibukan training.  These two man drills, as taught by Zempo Shimabukuro use multiple attacks, defenses, counter attacks, and counter defenses between training partners.

The main focus of the drill is to begin developing the ability for the student to transition from defense to offense in the moment that a continuous attack cannot be interrupted or eliminated.

By utilizing these two man set drills, the karateka learns to develop and sense or “flow” that enables an “instinctive” action without conscious thought.

Learning to change on the "fly"

These pre arranged sets for Renzoku Kumite are based on the traditional Okinawan Kata movements, or as the students advance, can be based literally on  ANY particular offensive or defensive sequences that the individual student has learned and feels comfortable doing.

One of the most important and misunderstood concepts behind Traditional Karate Kihon training, is that repetition builds muscle memory, and muscle memory builds reflexive response.  And reflexive response is the path to “Mu Shin”  or “No Mind” .  Much more on this subject to come.

On top of all the drills and Valuable Oral presentations by Sensei Dan Smith, 9th Dan and 1 of only 2 9th Dans ever presented to a foreigner on Okinawa, testing and a beautiful awards banquet and ceremony was conducted Saturday night.  A few Senior Seibukan Members were honored and entered the Seibukan Hall of Fame.

I would also like to take the time to thank my wonderful family for all the support that they have shown me over the last 10 years.  Without their blessings and support, none of these things would have ever happened, and Ocala Karate & Fitness would never have been possible.  They are my world.

This is my motivation!

New Karate Youth Class Starting November 10 2009

I just wanted to officially announce the start of a NEW Karate Class here at Ocala Karate & Fitness.  This new class has really got us excited and I can’t wait for opening day.  This action packed Traditional Okinawan Shorin Ryu Karate class is going to be open to members between the ages of 11 and 14 years old.  This class is guaranteed to be action packed and full of high energy explosive drills that will have Ocala Karate & Fitness’s youth program being talked about all over Ocala.  So anyone looking for the best traditional karate class geared towards 11 -14 year olds, look no further.  This is what you are looking for.  Our classes will be teaching our members not only self control, focus, balance, discipline, and getting them fit at the same time.  But also how to set attainable goals, and how to reach them.  This is what makes Karate so important to our youth today.  It teaches them, that through proper focus, and discipline, anything and all things are possible.  It is truly up to us as individuals to figure out what it is we want and how to go get it.

As the members train over the next few years they will then be eligible to enter into our teenage/adult class.  This class teaches the same fundamentals as the youth class, but focuses on issues and how to deal with problems that begin as we get older.  Everything from advanced street self defense, to proper health and fitness.  All this is taught and can be achieved through our many programs that we have to offer at Ocala Karate & Fitness.  From Karate to weapons, or even our new fighting fit boot camp, we will continue to work towards a better tomorrow.  Every year we are adding to our curriculum of classes to better offer Ocala a TRUE Martial Arts Fitness Center.  A fitness center that was build around the concepts and building blocks of Okinawan Karate.  If we can teach our youth from an early age to respect ourselves and take pride in who each one of is, as an individual, then tomorrow’s group of adults will be a healthier, more fit society that will continue to keep America as a world leader.  It’s up to us today though, to help make tomorrow a better place to live.  So contact us today at 352-694-6304 and let’s see what we can do to get you started.
